On April 8th, a total solar eclipse will traverse the Pacific Ocean before casting its shadow over Mexico, the United States, and Canada, finally concluding its journey above the Atlantic Ocean.

This astronomical event takes place when the moon slides into perfect alignment with the sun, cloaking its luminous face and allowing the sun’s elusive corona to emerge.

The path of totality, where the full eclipse is observable, is a slender corridor approximately 71 miles (115 kilometers) wide. While a partial eclipse can be observed outside this path, the sun’s coverage diminishes with distance from the centerline.

As the day ends, the western shores of Ireland and Scotland will catch a glimpse of the partial eclipse.

Total Solar Eclipse Timing

The eclipse’s totality will be observable at these local times:

  • In Mexico: from 10:51 MDT to 12:32 CST
  • In the US: from 13:27 CDT to 15:35 EDT
  • In Canada: from 15:12 EDT to 17:16 NDT

For detailed paths and information, a search for “eclipse track 8 April 2024” online is recommended.

Londoners can anticipate the next solar spectacle, a partial eclipse, on March 29, 2025.
