“NCIS,” the long-standing CBS crime drama, delves into the intertwined work and personal lives of the agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service’s primary team, tasked with solving crimes related to the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, as well as their kin. Since its debut in 2003, the show has become one of the longest-running evening dramas in the U.S., surpassed only by “Law & Order: SVU” and the original “Law & Order.” The show’s popularity has given rise to various spin-offs, including the successful “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “NCIS: Hawai’i,” and “NCIS: Sydney.”

Introduced in the fifth season, Special Agent Leon Vance, portrayed by Rocky Carroll, initially served as the interim director of NCIS within the Internal Affairs division. He secured the position permanently in the subsequent season and has been a mainstay ever since. The tenth season brought tragedy when Vance’s spouse, Jackie (played by Paula Newsome), was fatally shot. Vance’s offspring, fathered with Jackie, has been absent from the series since the eleventh season. However, this changes in the twenty-first season’s episode titled “A Thousand Yards,” where Jared Vance revisits, now portrayed by a completely different actor, showcasing a fresh appearance.

Jared Vance, the progeny of Jackie and Leon Vance and the younger sibling of Kayla Vance, is a character on “NCIS.” Both Jared and his sister were beneficiaries of The Leroy Jethro Gibbs Scholarship Fund, an endowment established by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (portrayed by Mark Harmon) in honor of his deceased daughter, Kelly Gibbs.

Initially, Khamani Griffin took on the role of Jared in the sixth season, followed by Akinsola Aribo during the ninth to eleventh seasons. The character is now brought to life by Spence Moore II, acclaimed for his performances in “All American,” “Superman & Lois,” and “Creed III.” While the reasons for the recasting have not been disclosed, it is presumed to align with Jared’s maturation. Since his last appearance on “NCIS” in 2013, Aribo has largely stepped away from acting. Conversely, Moore has been actively involved in the industry since 2016, with roles in “Criminal Minds,” “13 Reasons Why,” “S.W.A.T.,” and “Grown-ish.”

The relationship between Vance and his son is fraught with tension, and the forthcoming episode in the twenty-first season will confront this dynamic. The episode’s summary reveals Vance’s attempt to reconcile with his distant son by justifying his continued commitment to NCIS despite the inherent risks. Meanwhile, the team faces a threat from a former adversary.

Brian Dietzen, who plays Jimmy Palmer, offered insights into the episode in an interview with Parade. He explained that through Jared’s perspective and inquiries, the episode explores the significance of NCIS and the dedication it demands. Dietzen expressed high praise for the script and teased that the audience would gain meaningful insights into the show’s value, though he refrained from divulging further details.

The landmark 1000th episode will also revisit other beloved characters, including Joe Spano’s endearing Tobias “T.C.” Fornell and “NCIS: Los Angeles’” Kensi Byle, portrayed by Daniela Ruah.
